It's graduation week for a lot of young folks out there and there are a few pregnant girls who are desperately shouting out for help with where they are headed in life...they needed some validation and so I will share with you what I have sent them and in a few days I will finish the Top 5...
This is a letter I wrote to my cousins child when she was having a rough time in her life...I'm giving it to you so you can know how much I care for you and hope the best for your future.
Dear (Insert YOUR name here)...
I hesitate sharing my experiences with you because it was a time when I felt angry at my parents, my family and friends. I believed they didn't understand me and to this day they do not understand in full everything I went through. It is impossible for me or anyone else to understand what you're going through. It is impossible for any one to solve your problems. You are the only solution to your problems. But, because your family loves you they want to help you - and that's okay.
Getting help is okay. I got a lot of help by speaking to my teachers at school whom I trusted, talking to the school counselor and also my bishop. I did not and still do not feel comfortable discussing these things with my parents and family and friends - and that's okay too. The important thing is that you have someone you can talk to. Someone you feel comfortable with and can trust. Remember - no one can solve your problems - just you. Don't lose sight of how YOU feel. What YOU think and what YOU need. You are the EXPERT on you. You alone will know what you need. What you want and how you feel.
So, 1 - No one will know in full what you are going through. You can talk and share your feelings, but remember - You are the EXPERT!!!
2- No one can solve your problems for you - You are the only solution!!
3- It's Okay to ask for help.
I want to share with you a secret. It's not really a secret, it's a recipe. A pattern. A way of changing how you think.
"You think it, You feel it, You do it"
Good or bad, it works both ways. If you continually tell yourself "I'm fat" "I'm ugly" "I'm no good" You will think it, you will feel it, and then do it. If you tell yourself "I am pretty, I am a good person, I am beautiful" You will think it, you will feel it and then it will happen. Put any thought to this pattern.
THINK IT!!
FEEL IT!!
DO IT!!
The most beautiful people I have ever met are the people with inner beauty. I'm sure you know at least someone who is like that. What is inner beauty? I will let you answer that. List on a sheet of paper what you think is inner beauty. Then circle the ones you want to be. Make yourself notes and hang them where you can see them everyday and read them. If you don't want anyone to see it then place them inside your scriptures or journal or textbook. What should the notes read? For example,
I like myself
I am nice to everyone I meet
I have beautiful hair and I love showing it off
I love to heat healthy foods
I love to exercise
I love to pray and talk to God
I love to practice the piano
These are my favorites because they are my greatest weakness. Some days I don't believe my notes to myself - but if I think it, then I will believe it, I will do it!! It is a powerful way to change how you feel. IT WORKS because that is how your brain learns. You think it. You feel it. You do it. Try it in every part of your life. Home, School, Church, Friends, Yourself.
I know I said you are the only solution to your problems, but I'm going to add to it. You can't do it by yourself. If you try to do it alone, you will be sad, lonely, and confused. I know. I've been there. It's no fun. There are no words for that awful lonely feeling that you feel.
On being alone - You can be surrounded with a group of kids and still be alone. Always keep good friends that have the same goals and desires as you. Bad friends can bring you down and cause you to be unhappy. It isn't easy because all you want is to have a friend, have a social life, But if those "Friends" aren't looking out for your best interests, It's the same as not having friends. So as hard as it might be to sever some of your relationships, DO IT! Because in the long run, you are what matters most.
The saying goes, "10 years from now it won't matter who your friends were in high school...You will lose contact with them. Your life changes and life goes on. You probably won't see your high school friends and there is a 98% chance you will have a whole set of new friends. BUT- it does matter who your friends are. Choose them wisely. Choose carefully. Think about the future. What kind of friends do you want? Start now to surround yourself with good people. Start now to be the kind of friend you'd want to have. You might have to go against the tide - against the popular fads, the "IN" group. But use your brain. Think about the future. Because right now is just a very small fraction of your entire life. 5 years from now you will be looking back at where you are today. And hopefully you won't have any regrets with the decisions you are facing right now.
If anyone could have given me self worth when I was struggling - that would be the best gift in the world. I even had a bishop tell me - "If I could give you anything in the world I would give you self worth." But he continued and said "I can't do that. That is a gift you give yourself. I still struggle with self worth. Satan tries so hard to use despair and hopelessness to fill my head with thoughts that I'm no good - that I'm not worth it - that there's no use in trying. But he is wrong. You and I are worth it! You will find your self worth by developing your talents.
Are you familiar with the Young Womans Value's? (You too guys)
Faith - Divine Nature - Individual Worth - Knowledge - Choice and Acountibility - Good Works and Integrity and Virtue.
It does not matter what college you attend, what your master degree is. It does not matter if you are a rock and roll star, movie actor, or the captain of the football team - If you don't have those values, than you don't have nothing. Work on these values. Understand them. Give them ACTION. What are your going to do with what you know?
Now I'm going to get spiritual - I know...I always hated it when leaders and parents told me to do "church stuff"....but for your sake and mine, let's call it "GET SPIRITUAL". You and I both know that we have a body of flesh and blood. We also have a spirit body. I have always been interested in the human body. I've studied about massage therapy, yoga, exercise training, natural healing with herbs...there are a lot of ways to heal your physical body. But how do we heal the spirit? No doctor or professor or nurse can look at your spirit and tell you what's wrong and how fo fix it. That leaves you and Heavenly Father. Do you now that miracles happen everyday - that doctors are astounded with disbelief... people overcome cancer, a heart starts beating again - things that doctors can't explain because there is a power stronger than mans knowledge and strength. It is the power of God often known as the Spirit of God.
Prayer is the way to God. If you want to talk to God then Pray. If you want God to talk to you then read the scriptures. Pretty simple? NO. Satan tries so many ways to distract us from praying and understanding the scriptures.
What ways does he use?
Television
Movies
The media
Books
Magazines
Peer Pressure
Self Pity
Contention and fighting
You can add to the list - there are so many ways, but do you see how easily it is to get distracted?
For a long time I wouldn't pray because I was angry. I didn't pray because I felt God didn't care. I wouldn't pray because I felt guilty for some of the things I was doing. But when I finally prayed, I knelt down, uncertain to what would take place. I expressed all my feelings, my hurt, my anger, my sadness, my loneliness, my confusion, and I asked Him - Do you love me? Do you care about me? I need someone to care about me, are you there? I felt a calm feeling, a peaceful feeling and I cried because it was so comforting and I knew then that God was there and everything would be alright. It did not solve all my problems right then and there but the knowledge that God love me, that Christ died for my sins so I could be forgiven - that knowledge carried me through. How well do you know your Father in Heaven? How well do you know Christ? These are your real friends. You might not feel that way right now, but if you have the desire to come to know them - you know how. It's not going to be easy and life will not get easier. The way you deal with life and how you face it - that makes it easier.
I know you probably don't want all this advice so enough for now. It would be nice to hear how you are doing - Take care of yourself and in the meantime, check in with your wise self and really think about things.
Jess
God? Are you there?
Number 2 Spirituality
How do you define Spirituality? To some it is finding harmony and balance in their lives. To others its rest and relaxation. There is the church goers who think of spirituality as service and church attendance...some think of it as their relationship with God while to others it is a belief system. Is Spirituality Carma? What goes around comes around? Is Spirituality Luck? Or do you believe that there is a Great God that rules the earth and all the matter above it and below it?
I think it's easy to mix spirituality with rest and relaxation or even health or exercise. I feel it is a balance of everything in your life. But I want to really focus on my relationship with God for this topic.
My life was so confusing growing up. I had a devoted church going mother that totally dedicated every living minute to service and worship. On the other hand I had an abusive father that contradicted everything she was trying to teach me. When I looked at the world all I saw was what others wanted me to see. I tried to please others by doing what I thought would make them happy. Somewhere along the way I was liberated and given an opinion and stood up for my own feelings and was able to recognize how I felt.
Somewhere along the way - I was "lucky". I had a spiritual guru...the only man on earth who really could explain the mysteries of God to me - and not to mention a psychotherapist...ha ha! Perfect antidote to my situation. This guru of mine helped me sort out all of my confusion and feelings of guilt. He taught me how to pray. Really pray. Not repetitious prayer but to make a divine connection from my heart to God.
I have to admit - I would scoff at those who said they "knew God" that "Jesus was their personal savior" such everyday language of church goers.
But kneeling on the floor with no one else to hear me - I prayed until I found the words. Until I felt a change of heart. Until I felt that there was a divine presence that loved and cared about me. It was a life changing event. I keep thinking about that moment in my life.
I've had to overcome some false ideas in my head.
I used to believe I was being punished by God. That I was a bad person and nothing ever good happened to me because God knew how damaged and ugly I was inside.
I used to believe in luck and wishing on stars. I used to believe that if I combined hard work and gave it all I had that I would be successful.
I used to chase who I thought I wanted to be and ignored who I was.
I used to believe that I was unlovable. And no amount of love and affection could change that. I felt that others were trying to trick me into what they wanted from me.
I used to think that church and God were just one more trick - a way to make me live the way I should - or the way the people in church felt I should live.
This is how I gained my perspective on Spirituality. I took the bible and started looking for descriptions of God. I made a compilation of these adjectives and descriptions and started to piece together who He is. I didn't have a real father figure...I had no idea what a loving father was.... but that IS - Who He is.... A loving Father. A God with all power and knowledge and wisdom and power. How can you love God if you do not know who He is. How can you say you know that Christ is your Savior if you don't know what He taught. If you don't know what He said.
I educated myself. Took all those stories I was ever told and read them and thought about them. But I think not even the most educated man in the universe could have convinced me about God. Knowledge is certainly part of it but the final act came from the heart. Not the physical pumping blood through your body heart - I'm talking about the spirit. The spirit that takes up space in your physical body and gives it life. The spirit that is made up from matter and molecules and "divine stuff". The stuff that stars and worlds are made from.
God wants us to think about Him. He wants us to think about the Savior. He wants His children to return to Him again. What is keeping you from developing your spirituality? Is it fear? Is it uncertainty? Is it some false idea or message that someone sold you?
For me - Spirituality is thinking about God. Desiring to become like Him. Spirituality is getting rid of all the distractions and things that desensitize me from feeling His Spirit touch mine. I can say with conviction in my heart now that I just don't believe in God. I know God exists and that He loves me. I am his child - a daughter of God. I'm not afraid or embarrassed to say that I believe in Spirituality and that I can communicate spirit to spirit with Him. I love God. And he loves me.
Coming soon.... Number 3.... let's get physical....

Coming soon.... Number 3.... let's get physical....
My top 5

What am I going to do this summer? What are you doing this summer?
Summer what summer? We haven't even had spring yet!!
The kids have 1 more week and they're out for summer - I haven't even complained about all the snow and rain and fog but was hit on the head with the realization that it is summer - HUH?
Recently I decided to clean up my mouth and language but decided to broaden it to my top 5 things I need to work on....
Number 1 FAMILY RELATIONS
Number 2 SPIRITUALITY
Number 3 LETS GET PHYSICAL!
Number 4 FOOD!!!
Number 5 Rest and Relaxation
I wanted family to be first. Top Priority. We get so busy that we tend to ignore each other. How can I still get everything done and still have time for my kids and my husband? Well the house ALWAYS needs to be cleaned and I DO want to prepare my children to be self suficient.... soooooo, Work together while cleaning! It takes longer to clean the toilet and unload the dishwasher when you are teaching a child to do it or letting them help you do it. But it enables you to talk and listen and communicate with each other. That is priceless. And it hardly feels like work when you are enjoying each other. For that child that refuses to do any type of chore...make it a game and say I want to spend time with you. You help me do this and when we are done we will do something that you want to do with me! You may have to get creative...I'll let you know how this one pans out for me. Anything you do - try to involve the kids - shopping, gardening, cleaning, laundry, cooking.....
We have been taking our kids on dates. Daddy time. Mommy time. One at a time. My kids love it. Put everything else out of your mind and focus on that child. Observe their reactions, their likes and dislikes, engage them in conversations and develop a trust level where they feel safe to tell you about anything knowing that you will not judge them or react to how they are feeling. I have found that my children behave and act differently by themselves when they do not have siblings around and they have your undivided attention. Their personalites really shine.
Don't forget about Daddy! Dates with your spouse is a must! Even if you hide on the front porch by yourselves for a few minutes. Find the time. Laugh - court one another. Hold hands and KISS!!
Speaking of kissing...hug and kiss your family members as often as possible. Even a hand on a shoulder, pat on the back or a love tap!
Darrel and I have been practicing NOT REACTING to our kids. We have been trying to observe their behaviors and tantrums and turning it into a teaching moment. It's so easy to yell and make threats and hand out time outs. It takes work to disect the problem and talk about feelings and help the kids realize what triggered the outburst. Parenting is a lot of work! We tell our kids that we are learning right along with them and just because we are older doesn't mean that we know everything.
That's all for now...I'll have Part two on Spirituality for you tomorrow!
redefining myself....
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
We got pregnant when were not expecting to get pregnant. I was overly excited. Announced it on face book...told everyone in the world. I couldn't stop smiling. I was looking forward to the morning sickness and aches and pains. May 1st I did an ultrasound and heard the heartbeat. What amazing feelings that created. I had thought we were done creating our family and was so pleased that we would be able to have one more... I love being pregnant.
Another ultrasound a few weeks later confirmed that we lost the pregnancy. Even though my body was rejecting it - my mind wanted to convince me other wise. I knew that miscarriages were emotional but I was not prepared for the physical pain. I have B- blood type and I got very sick - I lay in bed for 2 weeks before I sought a second opinion. The new Dr immediately gave me a RhoGAM shot and within 24 hours I was feeling much better. I followed that with medicine to help my body expel the rest of the miscarriage. This is just like real labor without the delivery of course - but I finally feel like I can go on with life.
And then there is the let down of hormones. I got emotional through out this process but it was today that I just sat down and cried my eyes out. I had to tell myself that it was okay - the depressing thoughts going through my head were just hormonal.
My son Jon wants to name the baby Spongebob. This has helped the children understand that they are not getting a baby brother or sister... Jon took it the hardest - he would like to have a brother somewhere among all those sisters. So we now have a baby spongebob waiting in heaven for us and my husband and I try not to laugh at bedtime prayers when the kids bless everyone - including spongebob.
I have to express my extreme thankfulness to my Husband - not once has he complained about helping with the laundry, the dishes, the shopping, bedtime routine - he has done it all while I laid on the couch or stayed in bed. I have come to love him more and more each day. So thankful that I was lucky enough to be the one he wanted to marry. I used to be envious of others who seemed to be "lucky" but I have grown to understand that luck has nothing to do with it....even the theory you get out of life what you put into it....just doesn't stand up to knowing that there is a real God in Heaven who watches over His children and loves them and cares for them like we love and take care of our own families.
I've been thinking about this a lot this week....I was asked to talk in church on Language. And I use colorful words a lot...and sarcasm to hide the feelings inside. I have slowly desensitized myself from feeling close to God.
I jokingly said to my friends that if I cleaned up my mouth they wouldn't recognize me. At least not the person they know. I want to change. I want to be the spiritual person that I know resides inside this body. I want to feel inspired. I want to have wholesome thoughts running through my head. I want to keep learning and growing. I'm returning to my spiritual self. I would love to know the mysteries of God... so I'm going to start with just this one thing.
I don't know how to translate that into a talk everyone can understand so I googled it...here's what I've got so far.
Swearing and cussing and talking ill of others leads to this...taken from Cuss Control Academy
It gives a bad impression
It makes you unpleasant to be with
It endangers your relationships
It's a tool for whiners and complainers
It reduces respect people have for you
It shows you don't have control
It's a sign of a bad attitude
It discloses a lack of character
It's immature
It reflects ignorance
It sets a bad example
It contributes to the decline of civility
It represents the dumbing down of America
It offends more people than you think
It makes others uncomfortable
It is disrespectful of others
It turns discussions into arguments
It can be a sign of hostility
It can lead to violence
It's abrasive, lazy language
It doesn't communicate clearly
It neglects more meaningful words
It lacks imagination
It has lost its effectiveness

all nestled in...again...
We ended up living with my in-laws for a few weeks.
There was a lot of washing blankets and SHHHH! Be Quiet! SHHHHH! Don't yell. Your too loud. We're inside...please use your quiet voice!
The kids slept on an air mattress and all of them were wetting the bed. It made me realize how stressed out they were - or how tired - or maybe too scared to go upstairs in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. But there was plenty of washing to do.
Valorie clung to me like a baby monkey and panicked if I went to a different room without her. It's been almost 4 weeks that we have moved into our "new" house and she is finally getting better. I think we are finally settled in again.
During all this chao's - Jon turned 7 and the highlight of his birthday was the very blue frosting on the cake.
Valorie turned 2 and she fell in love with one particular toy and hasn't set it down...a very UGLY my little pony. The kids think it's a unicorn.

Easter....We got snow dumped on us so we did everything inside.

I am just so grateful to be all nestled in again. Our little nest has been anchored and the little chicks are happily peeping.
